THE ATTACK ON THE EEL.
To the Editor. Si r> —l notice in your Saturday issue that the Southland Anglers’ Club intend holding an eeling competition from Saturday February 16, till February 25. This is a step in the right direction as it is a well-known fact that our rivers are badly infested, and Mr Eel takes a heavy toll on our young trout. Several fish I have caught this season have been badly scarred by eels, and other anglers have drawn my attention to this also. Now, I think it is up to us anglers to make a big effort this next week to rid our rivers of this pest. Leave your rods behind and get to it. 1 understand Shaun O’Sullivan and Dennis O’Shea of the Southern Cross have both booked possies on the Makarewa River, but I don’t expect either gentleman will be a prise-winner, though 1 bet they have their coate off on the job. Let us all take our coate off to it. —I am, etc., ANGLER.
