CHARGE OF MURDER
JEALOUSY SUPPOSED TO BE THE CAUSE. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright). (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association). MELBOURNE, February 14. In connection with the murder at Orange of a widower named Joseph Quinlan, further particulars show that when deceased’s son was sent to awaken him for breakfast he returned screaming “Daddy is lying in bed covered with blood.” Examination disclosed that deceased had apparently been struck with a tomahawk while asleep, though no trace of the weapon was found. It is suspected jealousy was the motive. A labourer named Thomas Henry Newton, a married man, was arrested and charged with the crime, being remanded by the Magistrate. He strongly denied the charge. It was stated that Newton on Tuesday purchased a gun and subsequently warned Quinlan to desist from paying attention to a certain woman. Later. Newton has now made a statement to the police, admitting that he killed Quinlan with the butt of a rifle which was subsequently found in a creek near the scene of the tragedy.
