CATHOLIC SCHOOLS

A REPLY TO ARCHBISHOP MANNIX. (Per United Press Association.) DUNEDIN, February 13. Replying to Archbishop Mannix on Catholic schools, Mr Howard Elliott stated that he did not object to Roman Catholics praising their own system of education, but to their doing so at the expense of the State system. Archbishop Man nix said that in countries where Catholics were in the majority the Protestant minority received everything they were entitled to, but to-day in Spain no one dare have a Protestant school or any school where the Roman dogma was not taught. Here, where there was a Protestant majority the Catholics were allowed to own schools, but they must build them themselves. Would Archbishop Mannix say how many Protestants were allowed to teach in schools in south-west Ireland, which was practically under the domination of the local priest, though paid for by English money. Soon the speaker hoped the Catholics would be paying rates on all their school buildings as other denominational schools did. The P.PA answer to Archbishop Man nix was that Catholics had more liberty in New Zealand than the Protestants in any Catholic country.
