SPORTING

NOTES BY SIR MODRED. Pine Bush Hack Racing Club's annual fixture to-morrow. Auckland advice reports Loyal Irish as very well at present. A. J. Me Flinn wns at Takapuna on Saturday and A. H. Wilson piloted Roseday. Oaklcigh is reported to be very lusty, but hw health is pronounced to be perfect.

The Takapuna winner King Merv is classed as a very promising spnnter in select company.

Mr W. R Kemball now claims three private trainers, B. Burgess, W. Hawthorne and T. Daly (ex-head lad I.

Handicaps for the Lumsden Hack R.Cs. annual meeting on Friday, February 8, are to be issued on Monday of next week.

The Wanganui-owned Orchid (Absurd — Gladioie) may be raced in open company at at D.J.C. Cup meeting.

Mr W. R. Kemball has disposed of the three-year-old filly All Gold, by Kilboy— Noctorum, and she is now in H. Lorigan's care.

With a 7.0 minimum in operation Bal dowa has not been badly treated in the Dunedin Cup under 8.2, but the distance may trouble him.

Londonderry (8.51 is better treated in President's Handicap Him J the flat at Wingatui than in the Autumn Hurdles (l|m.) with 11.7 to carry over the

It is reported from Auckland Racing Club’s headquarters that the number of yearlings educated at Ellerslie is in excess of that of several recent racing seasons.

Her race in Wellington Cup is stated to have found Limelight out, with the result that she ran a poor race in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, won by Gold Light.

Penelophon had galloped well with Razsle Dazzle prior to leaving Napier, hence her connections sent her out solidly backed for the Douro Cup, which she won narrowly.

. Hawthorne has taken*up Mr Kemball s jumping horses, including Tenterfield, Gladful and Birkenella, while Vagabond is already keyed up and is running well in flat events.

Silver Peak is in regular work with the local team trained by F. W. Ellis. Mr Stone s good mare is on the big side at present, but she is putting determination into her track tasks.

The three-year-old filly Valdoona, who won the Adrian Knox Stakes in Sydnpv on Saturday, is owned by Mr J. J. Leahy, who purchased Lascelles and Golden Tresses from Mr G. D. Greenwood in the Spring for 2500gns.

The North Island cross-country horseman. VS J. Bowden, who is not unknown in Southland, is riding work again at Foxton, having joined F. Carmont’s stable. Bowden has been laid aside for some time is the result of injuries.

A Wanganui writer states that there is some prospect of a great field of sprinters lining up for the Jackson Stakes next month. It promises to be one of the most interesting contests in the history of the race, as amongst those which may go on with their engagement.- are: Gloaming, Glentruin, Tamatete, Motley, Tukia, Rtzzlp Dazzle and Nigger Minstrel. It is safe to say that now Gloaming has made a successful come back several owners will hesitate to start their horses at Wanganui if they have to meet R. J. Mason’s pupil.

The French horse, Epinard, says Hector Gray, is the best in the world. All the old trainers say he is the best horse they have seen for the last fifteen years. He describes Epinard as a fine-looking chestnut, built on slim lines. He is a horse that has been backed to win millions. On one occasion he would have broken the ring had he won, and he was very unlucky not to do so. He carried 9.3, led all the way, swerved across the course, was straightened up, came again and was beaten only a head in record time.

Local trainer R. Bromby is devoting a considerable amount of attention to Highburn at present and it is intended to race him in minor flat events round about Easter time. The son of All Red and Clementine, however, is destined for the jumping game, and, following on the Riverton fixture, he will probably be seasoned behind the Birchwood pack. Highburn is a goodlooking gelding and just the kind to develop as a timber-topper, while he has a natural desire to negotiate obstacles, being prepared to clear fences at any old time for his own gain or amusement.

A special horse train will leave Christchurch to-day for Dunedin carrying a large number of light harness horses claiming engagements at the Forbury Park T.Cs. Summer meeting on Thursday and Saturday next. One of the features of the forthcoming fixture will be the New Zealand Troiring Stakes, £6OO (Um. I, in

which three-year-old square trotters bred in Maoriland and the United States are going to meet under classic event conditions. This race, the richest of its class in New Zealand, will be decided on Saturday next.

Warhaven ran down half a mile on the 5.R.C. dirt track on Saturday morning in company with the three-year-old black Balboa gelding from R. Bromby’s stable. The pair ran home together under control, Warhaven not appearing to be too fond of ground with a sting in it.

The English opinion that H. Gray’ is very smart at the barrier (writes ‘Carbine’’ in the N.Z. Times I has received plenty of support during the Wellington R.C. Summer meeting. He has jumped all his mounts out well, and on Thursday he won from end to end on Passionless. Gray won three races at Trentham last week.

Her exertions on the firm galloping ground at Gore did not do Kyleboa any good and the locally-trained filly is undergoing repairs.' The dadghter of Balboa and Lady Kyle, who is a nippy galloper, has always been bothered with her feet and has on several occasions given J. Pankhurst cause for concern in consequence. She is a very nice filly and it is to be hoped for the sake of her owner, Mr T. A. Fahey, that she trains on successfully, as the local owner has been very unfortunate with the dam of Kyleboa. his matron having lost two or three foals in succession.

Francaise lightened up noticeably as the result of her exertions at Gore, but her races left her undisturbed and she should soon freshen up again. In both her starts at the GJLC. fixture Mr W. T. Hazlett’s mare behaved really well for her and it is evident that her trainer, F. J. McKay, has her well in hand when he acts as his own jockey.

It will be noted that the smart young pacer, Prince Pointer, who attracted a considerable amount of attention at the Gore Clubs Annual fixture on Boxing Day, has been handicapped for the N.Z. Metropolitan T.C.’a Summer meeting at Addington on February 9.

Writing in the N.Z. Times of aJnuary 25, “Carbine” remarks: —‘Talamon’s form yesterday was not true. He would not have been brought all the way to Wellington if he '•culd Mo no better than yesterday’s runr.ir.g might indicate. He was made a fol of use of and that did not help him?’ It • jay be pointed out to the Wellington wr. <r that al! the souther* horses visiting Treathxr. arc not champions and th a;

Palamon is a moody customer, who is a long way removed from the championship

The San Fran gelding. Santonio, was for sale prior to winning the Metropolitan Handicap at Trentham. and incidentally, beating Glentruin by a neck. A. Oliver’s pupil started eighth in order of selection when he downed a warm favourite in the Southland representative.

The Mataura Ensign scribe “Starter” comments:—“Considerable discussion was aroused during the Gore meeting when it became known that the Trotting Association had instructed the stipediary steward, Mr G. E. Curry, to take an official record of the colour and markings of the pacer Master Basil. The gelding figured in the race books as Mr D. Brophy’s blk g Master Basil, by Prince Alert, aged, and is trained and ridden by the well-known horseman, J. McLennan, of Oamaru. Master Basil started racing in the season of 1920-21 as a five-year-old, and although he was started in a fairly large number of races he has not won up to date. On the first day at Gore Master Basil played up at the post before the start of his race and did not strike off with the rest of the field. On the second day he went away and appeared to hold a chance of winning at one stage, but at the finish although under punishment he could not do better than run a moderate second to Ardlussa, who won comfortably. Master Baril’s time was 4min for the 13 furlongs—or worse than a 2.28 gait, so that he is hardly worth keeping in training. J. McLennan was highly indignant at the implied stigma cast against himself and his horse, and intends having the matter fully ventilated by the Trotting Association."

The North Island gelding, Bugle Note, who has been purchased for Southland by Mr W. Stone, was secured as a yearling in Christchurch in 1921 by his late owner, Mr A. McDonald, for 130 guineas. He is a wen-bred three year-old, as he was sired by Solferino from Mazaraka, by Martian — Two Step, by Stepniak—Faraway, by Bill of Portland—Happy Land, by Musket Atlantis (imp.). Mr Stone has had previous acquaintance with the family, as he used to own Mazurka's brother, Martial Dance, who cost 500 guineas as a yearling and failed to pay for his upkeep. Bugle Note has the reputation of not being too reliable, but the fact remains that he has stood up to a hard season’s racing, and there is no doubt about the son of Solferino having raced consistently at the recent Wellington R.C. meeting. If not over-taxed in the meantime, he may develop into a useful horse next season.

Writing from Mataura a correspondent, who, by the way, does not furnish a name, states: —‘‘Just allow me to state how much the muse suppljed by a very'fine orchestra at the Gore R.C. Summer meeting was appreciated. I have seen all sorts of compliments paid to different officials and to the good racing provided, but, so far, never a word in praise of the music. It was a beautiful day on the lawn at' Gore on Wednesday last and to sit in the grandstand or move about the lawn and listen to the music was worth the price of admission itself. The aplause at the conclusion of each item must have been very encouraging to the performers, and I overhead quite a number of complimentary remarks regarding the music.

Commenting on the racing of the second day of the Wellington R.C.’s Summer meeting a North Island writer says:—“An angry demonstration was made after the finish of the Metropolitan Handicap, a section of the crowd on the lawn voicing displeasure with the judge's verdict, contending that. Civility had run second. The crowd on the stewards’ stand, however, were convinced that Civility was a full two lengths behind Glentruin, who was beaten for first place by Santonio by a head.” It may be mentioned that other accounts of the race state that Civility ran out wide, and this may account for people at a bad angle thinking that she had headed off the Southland mare. A margin of two lengths is easily apparent to pressmen in a good position to judge and sporting scribes are well placed at Trentham—the sporting press gave second place to Glentruin without any hesitation.
