WESTLAND JUBILEE

" A PUBLIC LUNCHEON. (Per United Press Association.) HOKITIKA, December 17. A representative gathering attended at the Town Hall when a luncheon was tendered by the Westland branch of the Canterbury Progress League to the Ministerial party and visitors to commemorate the opening of Arthur’s Pass tunnel and the union of Canterbury and Westland. A long toast list was gone through, the speakers including Sir Francis Bell, Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, Mr H. E. Holland M.P Mr James O’Brien M.P., Hons. R. Mclntyre,’ H. L. Michel and J. Grimmond, M’s.L.C and Messrs W. K. McAlpine, Jenkin and N. Elmslie (British Trade Commissioner). Special references were made to the assistance rendered by Canterbury in connection with the tunnel agitation, to the favourable future prospects of Westland and district and to the success of the general arrangements and prospects of the Exhibition.

To-day the attendance at the Exhibition was fair, those present being mostly from the country. A big entertainment programme has been arranged, extending throughout the period of the Exhibition.
