HOME OF THE BEST
ENGLISH BREEDERS STILL SUPREME OBSERVATIONS OF A NEW ZEALANDER. “For horses, cattle, sheep, and pigs England is the home cf the best. They still breed the stuff that farmers in other parts of the world have to go Home to get.”— Such was the view expressed by Mr H. E. Martin, the well-known veterinary surgeon, of Christchurch, who returned to the Dominion by the s.s. Port Victor from an extended trip to England, Jersey, -and the Continent. Questioned by a Dominion reporter as to the condition of stock at Home, Mr Martin stated that England was undergoing a bad time at present as the result of a serious outbreak of foot and mouth disease, which was so severe that all exportation of sheep and cattle had been prohibited. Farmers in the Old Country, he said, had a hard row to hoe owing to rates and taxes being so high. New Zealand was a much more profitable country for the fanner. Mr Martin attended the Royal Show at Newcastle-on-Tyne, the Royal Lancashire Show at Liverpool, the Royal Jersey Show on the Island of Jersey, and the Olympia Horse Show. He found the horses quite equal to what they were when he last visited England thirteen years ago, but there were not so many of them. Hackney horses had fallen off in numbers owing to the advent of the motor-car but hunters and jumpers w’ere still very fine. In dairy cattle he saw some wonderful milking Shorthorns, which were in great favour in England at present.
