EDUCATION BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Southland Education Board on Friday was attended by Messrs H. E. Niven (chairman), J. C. Thomson, A. Bain, H. Smith, G. Johnston, J. D. Trotter and F. W. Preddy. REPAIRS. Applications for repairs were granted as follows: East Gore:—For half-cost, on the subsidy principle, of supply of Planet Junior plough and driller and half-cost of supply of boiler and stand. Raymond’s Gap:—For supply of a flag, subject to approval of Department. Gladfield: —For of £2 towards clearing gorse on roadline fronting teacher’s residence.—Committee to report in future if gorse is not receiving regular attention. RESOLUTIONS. The following resolutions were carried: — “That the chairman be authorised to draw up for submission to the Department the first instalment of schools and residences to be equipped with the electric light, as suggested by the Department in its communication of date December 7. “That the School Committee be advised that the school and residence in Seaward Downs district are to be included in the first instalment of buildings to be equipped with the electric light. “That in reply to its communication, the Balfour Committee be informed that the Board is of the opinion that the cost of installing a septic tank for Balfour School and residence is prohibitive, the probable cost being about £3OO. “That the Nightcaps Committee be asked to supply an estimate of the cost of the concrete and iron fence proposed to be erected for the school in this district. “That the East Gore Committee be advised that the installation of the hot water sendee in the teacher’s residence will be authorised on condition that it will’ contribute £lO towards the cost of the work.”
