NEW SCHOOL BUILDINGS

PLANS BY PUBLIC WORKS - DEPARTMENT. OBJECTIONS IN DUNEDIN. Discussing the memorandum from the Director of Education stating that, in view of the very large sums paid annually as fees to architects in connection with new schobls, all plans and specifications would in future be prepared by Public Works officers, in consultation with officers of the Education Department, Mr Scott (chairman of the Management Board of the Technical College), Dunedin, stated that as a builder, he had experience of the planning of the Public Works Department, and he was sure that the result would be unsatisfactory. He had known lithographed plans 50 years old to be used. Further, the Wellington officials did not consider climatic conditions outside that centre. The Board resolved to protest against the proposal, suggesting instead the appointment by the Education Department of an architect for each district.
