FOR THE SAILORS

SHEEPOWNERS FUND. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, December 15. At the annual meeting of the Trustee, of the Sheepowners’ “Debt to Seamen Fund,” the Hon. E. Newman presided. The report stated that 526 application, for relief had been considered. Payment, to sailors and dependents during the year totalled £6119. It was anticipated that assistance required for permanently disabled sailors and dependents would be not less than £2OOO per annum for some years to come. Assistance was also given in certain cases in the form of loans without interest and the usual distribution of Christmas presents to children of fund beneficiaries was made. The Fund’s capital after an expendi. ture of £40,000 now amounted to £155,000. The chairman expressed appreciation of the' assistance rendered by the Salvation Army, Navy League and other voluntary helpers. Dr. Newman wished the subscribers would take a keener interest in the fund which was unique and peculiar to New Zealand, where it was peculiar to one class of residents, the sheep farmers. The report was adopted and office bearer* re-elected.
