MEXICAN REBELLION
A FIERCE ENCOUNTER. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) MEXICO CITY, December 14. A telegram from Juarez states that the fiercest encounter between the rebels and President Orbregon’s troops resulted in the defeat of the rebels under Estrada, one of whose captains, with 160 men and 125,000 pesos in cash, deserted to the Government troops. General Alvero Obregon has been President of Mexico for three years. Under his regime Mexico has made remarkable progress, and has enjoyed a more orderly existence than she has ever experienced since the dictatorship of President Diaz. General Obregon’s assumption of power followed the deposition and murder of General Carranza. His Government has not yet been diplomatically recognised by the United States and Britain, but early recognition is expected from the United States.
