MOTOR ASSOCIATION
MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. X The monthly meeting of the Southland Motor Association Executive last evening was attended by Messrs J. F. Lillie rap (chairman), T. F. Macdonald, H. W. Boyes, W. F. Scandrett, G. Chewings, F. G. O’Beirne, E. McPhail, W. F. Sutton, J. R. Haigh, G. Cruickshank, A. E. Lea, I. Von Tunzleman, F. J. Irvine, and Dr Brown. CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was received from the Borough Council in reply to the Association’s letter in regard to the unsatisfactory manner in which sewerage excavations were filled in. The letter stated that the foreman of works had been instructed to see that the spoil from such excavations were rammed down. —The letter was received. A letter from the Borough Council in regard to the parking of motor cars in Don and Esk streets, stated that the inspectors had been instructed to see that the right-of-ways in these two streets were kept clear. The chairman said that he still thought that the parking of cars in narrow streets was dangerous and likely to result in an accident. Dr Brown suggested that a sub-committee should be appointed to go into the matter further, but in view of an opinion expressed by Mr Boyes that the Council would not alter its decision, it was decided to take no action. In reply 4o a communication from the Association asking the Council to re-consider the provisions of the by-law prohibiting vehicles from passing standing tramcars, the Town Clerk wrote stating that the committee could not see its way to recommend the Council to make any alteration, and no action had been taken.—The letter was received. The Riverton Progressive League wrote in reference to the erection of finger-posts at various pointe on the road from Invercargill to Riverton, and requested the Association to erect them as soon as possible. A motion, moved by Mr T. F. Macdonald and seconded by Mr W. F. Sutton, to the effect that members of the Association should be requested to inform the secretary of the number of any car travelling at an excessive speed, and that the secretary write a polite note to the driver of the car, was defeated. LICENSE FEES. The secretary was instructed to write to the Borough Council stating that the Association considered that the charging of annual license fees fot drivers was unreasonable in view of the fact that registration fees were also charged. Also to suggest that the drivers’ licence should be printed on similar lines to that issued in Christchurch, and that the fee be a non-recurring one of 10/-. It was also decided to request the Council to consider the matter of reducing the limit for registration fees from 15 miles to 5 miles. A letter was received from the South Island Motor Union stating that it had been decided to hold the quarterly meeting on November 28.—Received.
A sub-committee was appointed to consider the question of holding a sports day early in the New Year.
