SCHOOL SPORTS

A RECORD GATHERING, FINE WEATHER PREVAILS. The Invercargill and Suburban Schools’ Sports’ Association held its fifth annual fixture yesterday. Twenty-six schools competed, and the programme was a lengthy one comprising fifty events for which there were 2,500 entries. As an unlimited number of entries would have proved too unwieldy, the entries in each event were limited to four from each school. It should be pointed out, however, that all the school children had an opportunity to prove their ability as a series of eliminating sports had been held in each school, and the four best in each event chosen. The grounds were in excellent condition and the weather was perfect. The attendance of the public was good, and it is pleasing to note that the children's sports are growing in popular favour. The sports began at half past ten, and the boys’ and girls’ events were run off simultaneously. The programme was carried through well up to schedule time, and the committee is to be congratulated for its excellent organisation. It was evident that the children had been well trained, and the -teachers deserve great credit for devoting so much of their own time to developing the athletic prowess of their young charges. The Southland Education Board granted a whole holiday to all schools taking part in the sports, and it is gratifying to know that the physical side of education has at last been given its due place in the school curriculum. The boys’ championship challenge shield, donated by the Hon A. F. Hawke, M.L.C., was won by Marist School, while St. George was second. The girls’ championship challenge shield, donated by the Hon. J. A. Hanan, M.P., was won by Middle School and St. George was again second.
