A highly successful re union of returned soldiers was held in the Theatre Royal on Monday evening, when the building was well filled. Mr R. B. Bannerman presided. At the commencement of the proceedings those present stood in silence as a mark of respect to the memory of a fellow-Digger, Thomas Shepherd, whose death was reported that afternoon. After the loyal toast had been honoured the chairman proposed that of the R.S.A. In doing so he stated that man}' Diggers did not realise the great amount of good work the Association was doing on behalf of disabled -men and their dependents. ‘ He appealed to all returned men to support their association. Our local tennis club comprises an energetic membership as must be realised by all who inspect their beautiful court which is now almost completed. Without exaggeration it would do credit to a very much larger centre and it has only been possible by the spontaneous assistance of the majority of the residents of the district. The whole district is delighted to hav? its two highly-esteemed residents, Mr.? Sheed, Senr., and Mr John Knowles, home again, each having gone through serious operations and now being on the sure way to recovery. The many friends of Mrs J. H. McLeod will be pleased to learn that she is as well as can be expected after the serious operation she recently underwent. Mr John Crombie’s fine residence is just about complete. Being situated on a commanding site overlooking the township with a splendid view of the plains, it forms an impressive addition to our surroundings. The Otamete stream has been well patronised by fishermen this season and some very nice fish have been caught. It is gratifying to meet “sports” from other ditsricts trying their luck in our noted stream. Mr Edwin Hargest, of Pine Bush, got a lovely bag of 18 fish last Saturday.
