MAGISTRATE’S COURT

(Before Mr G. Cruickshank, S.M.) Charles Ransom Fairweather, for using indecent language in Tay Street, was convicted and fined £2, 7/- costs. Douglas James Grant, charged with assisting in the commission of an offence under the Arms Act in the sale of 50 cases of blasting pellets without a permit, was convicted and fined £l, 7/- costs. The firm in which defendant was employed, Fairbairn, Wright and Co. (Dunedin), were convicted and discharged for a similar offence. For resorting to the Waihopai Reserve for the purpose of consuming liquor, Robert Corrie was convicted and fined £2, 7/costs. Andrew Millar was convicted and discharged for having an unregistered shot gun and Winchester rifle in his possession. Defendant stated that the two firearms had belonged to his son who had been killed at the war.

Francis G. O’Beirne for leaving a motor car for more than 15 minutes in contravention of the by-laws was convicted and fined 10/-, no costs. Michael Joseph Kilkelly, charged with leaving a car pointing in the wrong direction, was similarly dealt with. For cycling on the footpath Conrad Cosper was convicted and fined £l, costs 7/-. A similar penalty was inflicted on Alfred Paul for cycling at night without a light. Patrick Joseph O’Keefe was remanded till Monday on a charge of stealing 58 bottles of stout valued at £3 10s at Wallacetown Railway Station. The Senior-Sergeant said it was a partnership affair, the other defendant having been charged on Tuesday.
