DIPERIAL WIRELESS

NEW BRITISH STATION. READY NEXT YEAR. LONDON, June 27. Postal officials state that the Government has purchased a site at Hill Morton, near Rugby, for the erection of an Imperial wireless station. Negotiations are still proceeding with the Marconi Company concerning licenses to permit the erection of privately-owned stations linking up with companies operating in the Dominions, colonies, and foreign countries. The British Government has placed the contract for the erection of the masts at Hill Morton. The station will be the largest and most powerful in Britain, and will be capable, in normal conditions, of reaching India and Australia for several hours each day. The new station is expected to be completed for transmitting messages inside a year. Early completion is urgent, because the Leafield Station is now working almost to its full capacity, mostly with messages to Cairo and beyond. Communications with Australia could be hastened by the rapid completion of the Amalgamated Wireless Company’s station in the Commonwealth. That station could link up with Leafield, messages from which are occasionally heard by ships off Australia. Connection could also be made with the Cairo station, which maintains a continuous service between Egypt and England.
