UNLAWFUL STRIKE UNION FINED £2OO. (Per United Press Association). WHANGAREI, July 10. Contingent on the recent strike at the Hikurangi coal mines, the Inspector of Awards, Mr Joseph Hollows, of Auckland, took proceedings in the Magistrate’s Court at Whangarei against the Hikurangi Coal Miners’ Union, to recover £2OO as a penalty for a breach of the Arbitration Act, on grounds of abetting in unlawful strikes and aiding the continuance thereof. He also proceeded against twelve employees of Messrs Foote and Doels mine, where the dispute originated, including the president of the Union, as parties to an unlawful strike. After hearing lengthy evidence the Magistrate, Mr Hewitt, imposed the maximum fine of £2OO on the Union, and £lO each on the defendant miners.
