SEA DISTURBANCE

HUGE COLUMN OF STEAM (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) SUVA, July 10. (Received July 10, 10.440 p.m.) Captain Davey, of the Tofua, reports that at ten o’clock on July 1 he sighted a dense column of steam rising 90 to 100 feet 19 miles north-west of Nukualofa. Previously the vicinity was always a pale green patch, now the sea was bubbling two feet high. The steam was visible 20 miles away. An earthquake occurred at Nukualofo on the previous day. It was estimated that the area from which the steam was rising was half a mile in extent. Passengers on the Tofua were greatly interested, the ship being within easy distance for observing the phenomenon.
