Mr W. D. Andrews, Christchurch, arrived in Invercargill by last night’* express. Mr A. Gardiner, of the local branch of ths Bank of New Zealand, has received notice of his transfer to Wellington on promotion. Out of ten applicant*, Mr G. McDermott has been appointed to the position of Inspeotor for the South Invercargill Borough. Mr Poynton, S;M., who has been appointed sole arbitrator in the Paparoa coil dispute, left for Wellington last night, says an Auckland Press Association message. Miss Elspeth Dunholm, Oamaru, who is to take part in the Orange Concert on Tuesday night, arrived by last night’s express.

The Mayor (Mr Bain) and Councillors G, J. Broad and R. P. Meek were appointed representatives of the Municipality on the new Fire Board at the Town Council last night.

Mr A. M. Croucher, who was a passenger on the express at the time of the Main Trunk railway disaster, and whose graphis story appeared in the Southland Times on Monday, was at one time employed in the local Post Office as a letter-carrier. He is well-known in Invercargill and took a keen interest in ambulance work and in swixnming.

The late Thomas Monaghan, who died at Gore on Monday, was the eldest son of the late Mr Patrick and Mrs Monaghan, old settlers at Croydon Siding. He was educated at the local school, and for a tuns at the Convent of Mercy, Gore. Although never in robust health, he successively worked on his father's farm, and eventually he worked on his own account the Stanley Hill farm, near Gore. After disposing of it, he purchased a farm near Riversdala, which he held at the time of his death. Hs was a great favourite amongst the younger generation of the farming community, and will be missed by a large circle of friend*. He quietly passed away at his mother’* residence, Crombie street, Gore.
