IMMIGRATION

UNITED STATES CONDITIONS. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright). (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) WASHINGTON, June 21. The Government has, under advice, adopted a plan requiring trans-Atlantic steamship companies to maintain at their own expense proper immigration stations. The United States Commisaoner has requested the Solicitor-General to rule regarding the legality of the plan. The move conies as the result of criticism in the British Parliament over the treatment of immigrants on Ellis Island. The Immigration Commissioner has made a statement admitting that Ellis Island was unsuitable for the detention of persons other than of the immigrant type. It was not intended for cabin passengers, but since the quota law it had been necessary to detain all classes, hence the innumerable complaints. SETTLEMENT OF AUSTRALIA. SYDNEY, June 23. Major-General Lestrange Eames, addressing the Society of St. George, outlined a scheme for settling a hundred thousand British men and women in the northern Territory by the combination of the Government, private enterprise, and white settlers. He contends the scheme will be practicable if the Government will guarantee a portion of the money for the construction of railways, as the British Government did when railways were constructed in parts of India. BOUND FOR CANADA AND UNITED STATES. LONDON, June 23. (Received June 24, 5.5 p.m.) The Athenia and Metagama have left Clyde with 3000 Scottish immigrants for Canada and the United States. The steamers Columbia and Montrose are shortly to take a further 1200.
