Mr A. H. Mackrell returned by Saturday night’s express from Palmerston North, where be attended the Manawatu Show. Mr B. C. Baastian, Southland County engineer, returned on Saturday night from Christchurch, where he attended a conference of engineers to consider the roads problem. In recognition of his original work in facial surgery, the University of Birmingham has conferred on Dr. H. P. Pickerill, C.8.E., of Dunedin, the degree of Master of Surgery. Mr Joseph Metzger, of Bluff, leaves to-day for Wellington to join the sx lonic for a trip through Britain and America. He will be accompanied by his daughter, Miss Metzger. Mr H. G. Lakeman, telegraph engineer in charge of the country section, Otago district, will leave shortly to take up more responsible duties in Auckland. He will be succeeded by Mr P. H. Mason, from Gisborne. Miss Madeline Vyner arrived by Saturday night’s express to fulfil her engagement in connection with the Cafe Chantant Carnival now running in the Grand Theatre. Miss Vyner will appear each evening during this week.

The members of the Lyttelton Times and Star staffs met to express their good wishes to Mr T. A. M. Fleming, chief reporter, on the eve of his marriage, which took place in Christchurch last week. Mr M. L. Reading, editor-in-chief, handed Mr Flem-

Datta, one of the moet distinguished of living Indian Christian leaders, is shortly to pay a visit of about six weeks duration to New r Zealand. He is coming out under the auspices of the Young Men’s Christian Association and the Student Christian Movement. Dr. Datta’s name was first introduced to those who know him by his notable mission study book, “The Desire of India,” wiich was published in 1908, and was written from the point of view of an Indian Christian.
