ENGLISH CHAMPIONSHIP. LONDON, June 21. For the first round of the match play at Gleneagles, there was brilliant weather. Kirkwood beat Oke 4 up and 3 to play, Havers beat Butchart (the Scottish champion) 1 up; Barnes beat Holland 4 up and 2 to play, Braid beat W. Ball 4 up and 3 to play. Other winners were: Williamson, Seymour, Ackenten, F. Ball, Ritchie, Delatorre, who is a Spaniard, Johns, Lockhart, Gray, McNeill and Kirkwood. Kirkwood played magnificently with a score of out 35 and home 6 holes for 23. Havers was fortunate to win a dingdong fight. He cut his drive at the seventeenth hole into some broom, but had a good lie, where the ball might have otherwise been unplayable. .Butchart failed to qualify.
