AN APPRECIATION

Through the courtesy of a shopper, Mr J. W. Smith, of H. and J. Smith’s was permitted to publish the following letter eugolistic of the firm’s values:— Yarrow Street, 20/6/23. Ma Chere Marie:— Received your letter O.K. and note your appreciative remarks re our city. I agree with you in regard to the progressiveness of the Progressive Stores. I took your advice and sampled some of their values to day—they are absolutely great I H. and J. Smith have always been out on their own for bargains and value, but their latest easily caps the others. Their prices—well —I am satisfied they couldn’t be touched anywhere, not even in your gay city, Dunedin. Like you—l wonder how the firm can do it. Take their ribbons, you wrote that you bought a lovely broad one at 1/6 yard —I went one better. Had a look round the department and bought Bin. black glace for 6d a yard. Can you beat it? I suppose the price ordinarily would be 2/6. I went for the gauntlet kid you mentioned at 5/6, alas! they were all sold and I wasn’t altogether surprised—they were an absolute gift. However, I consoled myself with a pair of warm woollen gauntlets at 3/6, and a pair of heather hose at 3/6. By the way, they are selling hand-made Chinese lace, at 3 yards for 1/3—it is an absolute snip. Apropos lace, I saw dainty camisoles trimmed with lace at 5/6! and listen to this Fugi silk at 3/11 yard. There were heaps of other beautiful materials and blouses galore, all remarkably cheap. I was greatly taken with the Jazz aprons—they were so chic and so cheap, 4/11. Finally, I had a look at the hats, and my choice fell on a ribbon one priced 9/11. I believe they were originally 25/6! Now, what do you think of my shopping ? I feel highly pleased with my purchases. I intend to buy more —the chance is too good to miss. Write soon to Yours Affectionately, (Advt.).
