ABOUT PEOPLE

Mr E. Bowmar, chairman of the Southland County Council, who has been attending the Counties Conference in Christchurch, returned home by Thursday night’s train from the North. Mr G. S. Finlayson, who has been manager of the Edendale branch of the Bank of New South Wales for some time past, has been promoted to the position of man ager of the Gore branch, and will proceed there to take up his new position within the next fortnight. The sad news of the sudden death of Mr Charlee J. McMahon at Dunedin was received by his brother, Mr W. J. McMahon, of Leet street, last evening. The deceased was married to Miss Kitty McDonough, of this town, on Wednesday last, and they were proceeding to their future home in the North Island when Mr McMahon wm stricken with illness in Dunedin. At the ago of 81 years the death took place at Dunedin pn Sunday night of Mrs Mary Ann Bone, who came out to New Zealand from Blackfriars road, London, over 50 years ago by the ship Allahabad. With her husband, she was one of the earliest settlers of Shiel Hill, where they felled and cleared the bush country round about. The deceased was a very capable nurse, whose services were much sought throughout the district. She always enjoyed vigorous health, though she was practically bedridden for the last two years. She was the mother of 16 children, of whom the following are still alive:—Messrs George H. Bone (Otautau), John Bone (Oamaru), Richard Bone (Palmerston North) Andrew Bone (Stratford), and James Bone (Dunedin), Mrs E.- A. Catchpole (St. Kilda) and Mrs D. Marks (Oamaru).
