A MARACULOUS ESCAPE

ACCIDENT AT WALLACETOWN CROSSING. MOTORIST COLLIDES WITH TRAIN. What might easily have resulted in a fatal accident occurred yesterday, when the train leaving Invercargill at 4.10 p.m. for Tuatapere was struck by a motor-car at the Wallaoetown level crossing. The driver of the car waa Mr James Butler, of Winton, a contractor to the Southland Electric Power Board. He was driving with his side curtains up, so that his view was probably obstructed. On seeing the train he swerved in the same direction as it was going, and this probably saved his life, as he was thrown clear of the train and got up unhurt, except for a bruise or two. The car, which was a new one, was hopelessly smashed, and the violence of the collision may be gauged from the fact that the train engine was too badly damaged to proceed, and had to be repheed by another locomotive from InvorcaijiU.
