RIVER BOARD
WAIMATUKU TO BE STRAIGHTENED. Arrangements have at last been made by the Waimatuku River Board for its finance, and tenders for the work of straightening the river from source to mouth will soon be called. Mr A. McKenzie, the chairman of the Board, informed a Times reporter, that after a hold up of a considerable period satisfactory arrangements have been made to finance the scheme and work would be pushed on as speedily as possible. At present the intended treating the Waimatuku only, but when tjjis part of the scheme was finished they would commence work on the tributaries of the Waimatuku and thus improve the drainage of many thousands of acres of good land. It was the Board’s intention to call for tenders, but if these were not considered satisfactory it would apply to the Government for the loan of dredging machinery and steam navvies and do the work with these. “We have been waiting a long time,” he concluded, “and we do not intend to waste any more than necessary now.
