CAFE CHANTANT

OPENING TO-MORROW. The Grand Theatre has been entirely transformed in preparation for the ‘’Grand Cafe Chant ant,” which is to be opened to-morrow afternoon at 2 o’clock by his Worship the Mayor (Mr A. Bain). Carpenters, decorators, .stallholders, and a host of others have been busy, and the outcome cf their united efforts will be to convert the spacious Theatre into what will prove, with coloured illuminations at night, a charming fairy scene, in which the stately nikau palm, coloured streamers, evergreens, and flowers take a conspicuous place. Everything has been done with system, and the crowds who are certain Io throng the Theatre will find pleasure, entertainment, and profit that will amply repay their visit. This achievement affords a striking exemplification of what local initiative, can accomplish when a large band of voluntary workers become enthusiastic. The huge surprise packet scheme embraces every visitor. Several of the prizes are valuable, and warrant the assertion that there will be keen competition for their ownership. Side shows, rifle galleries, tea rooms, etc., are there to entertain the visitor, whilst the interior decorations and lighting effects will all assist in creating the real carnival spirit. The organisers have been successful in securing the services of Miss Madeline Vyner, the talented danseuse fresh from her London successes with the famous Russian ballet. Miss Vyner’s debut in Christchurch recently earned approbation and eulogistic comments in the local press, and her nightly performances will prove a source of exceptional attraction. The local bands will give concerts, and a large number of local artists w’ill supply musical and variety entertainment. Every evening a complete change of programme will be presented. Miss Muir’s party will open the entertainment on Saturday evening at 8.30. The sale of tickets has already exceeded all expectations, and crowded houses nightly promise to crown the efforts of those who have been working assiduously for several weeks.
