WAR FUNDS

SOUTHLAND ASSOCIATION. The monthly meeting of the Main Committee was held in the Association Rooms yesterday. Present: —Messrs J. Gilkison, H. W. Royds (Invercargill), T. McCarroll (R.S.A.), D. McDonald (Limehills), J. S. A. McDougall (Bluff), H. E. Niven (Edendale), K. G. McKenzie (Fortrose), and Dr. Trotter (Riverton). Apologies fcr absence were received from Messrs C. Bennet, D. Cuthbertson. J. Fisher, and A. McKenzie. The secretary presented an approximate statement of finance, which showed: Investments, £45.270; outstanding advances, £3861 9/9; in trust, £384 19/11. Receipts since last meeting: Refunds, £174 8/-; interest, £l5; W.L. Certificates matured, £l5; Copper Trail, £5; total, £206 8/-. Expenditure for same period: Relief grants, £398 16/1; advances, £377 9/8; printing and stationery, £l7 19/6; rent, £l3; insurance, £ll 15/9; telephone and firing, £1 14/7; administration, etc., £44 15/8; total, £865 11/3. Excess cf expenditure over receipts, £659 3/3. On current account, credit balance, £Bl2 13/5. The statement was received. Mr T. McCarroll (nominated by the Lumsden Branch), was appointed Councillor and Committeeman to represent Lumsden; Mr E. R. Bowler, of Gore, was appointed to represent Waikaka. The matter of appointing a Mataura representative was left over until next meeting. Several* letters in grateful acknowldgement of timely assistance rendered were received. Ths secretary applied for a reduction in salary, and for leave to engage in other secretarial work. He states that there was now a diminution in the number of cases being dealt with and though, in common with other societies, more difficulties were being met with in individual claims, he thought the time was ripe for the Committee to review the position with the object of reducing administrative costs. The mat-1 ter was fully discussed in Committee, and the application was agreed to, reduction to take effect as from September 1. The report of the Emergency Committee was reviewed, and referred cases dealt' with; after which new applications were considered and disposed of, relief grants amounting to £ll2 17/-, and advances £6O being authorised. Five applications were held over for further enquiry, three were referred to other societies, and four were declined.
