THE RUHR
FURTHER FRENCH RESTRICTIONS. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) PARIS, June 19. The Petit Parisien says the French and Belgian authorities, in order to increase pressure in the Ruhr, have decided to prohibit the transport of coke to unoccupied Germany. They also are taking over control of the remainder of the Ruhr railways. THE COLLAPSED MARK LONDON, June 19. (Received June 20, 8 p.m.) The Daily Express Berlin correspondent says the latest slump in the mark was not accompanied by the usual wild scenes of the previous slumps. The mass of the people have no longer sufficient money to purchas bare necessities. Shops are nearly empty. Storekeepers are watching the mark fall and are steadily raising prices. Practically all retailers have ceased calculating in marks, using dollars instead. Germany’s masses are showing signs of unrest, the Reichstag committee is considering the cause of the slump, but is unable to discover a scapegoat. General opinion is that unless means are found of avoiding a catastrophe the German currency will follow the Russian rouble and an economic crash is bound to follow the financial crash. MR BALDWIN SEEKING SETTLEMENT. LONDON, June 20. (Received June 20, 9.30 p.m.) Mr Baldwin, holding a conference with the Labour Party and Miners’ Federation, said the position in the Ruhr was adversely affecting industry in Britain. “So far as any one man can do anything, 1 am using the utmost endeavour to bring about a settlement.”
