COUNTRY NEWS

OTAUTAU. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Football is still one of the chief interests with the younger life of the town and district, and the three local teams, the A grade, the seconds, and thirds, have quite a following of ardent and enthusiastic supporters. The following have been selected to play in the third grade match against at that place on Saturday:— Forwards: Eason, Bulman, May, R. Norman, Niven, Bert Norman, Sheedy, Laidlaw and C. Brooker. Backs: Morrison, Lumsden, M. Matheson, Thomson, A. Harrington, Aylwood, and J. Walker. Another of the series of Territorial dances was held in the Town Hall on Tuesday evening. There was a good attendance, over twenty-five couples taking part, and an enjoyable time was spent in dancing, to music supplied by Mr Jellyman, Mr G. Hope acting as M.C. A good amount of interest is maintained in these periodical dances, which are very popular. A good deal of interest centres in the Stock Demonstration to be held at Clifden to-day, under the auspices of the Wairio branch of the Farmers’ Union. The following have been appointed as demonstrators in the various classes—Romneys, Mr R. Patterson; Clydesdales, Mr John Ewan; Herefords, Mr Janies King; Border Leicesters and Shorthorns, Mr G. P. Johnston; Working Dogs, Mr T. Prendergast; Ailments of Horses, Mr G. V. Snowball; Frisians, Mr W. Brash. A keen interest is being taken throughout the district in the annual ploughing match to be held at Drummond on Wednesday, July 4, in Mr Robert Kennedy’s paddock. This is one of the principal events of the year in the district, and is reflected over a wide area. The President’s Cup, value 10 guineas, and Mr Kennedy’s trophy of 5 guineas will be competed for. There will be the same classes for ploughing as in previous years. The events will start at 9.30 a.m., and good arrangements for luncheon are being made by the local Y.W.B.C.
