A Melbourne message records the deata of Sir David Hennessey, a former Lord Mayor.
Mr John Strauchan (chairman) and Messrs Gambrill and Kemp, members of tho recently appointed Timber Commission, leave by Monday's express for Balclutha. Mr D. W. Reese, the well known Canterbury cricketer, has left Christchurch for Sydney, and expects to be absent in Australia for about two years. Mr Reese paid periodical visits to Southland in connection with the Port Craig Sawmilling industry. The Governor-General sent the following telegram, through the Secretary of State for the Colonies, to the King on the occasion of the death of Princess Christian:—
“I beg to tender to Your Majesties, on behalf of the Government and people of New Zealand, and on behalf of Lady Jallicoe and myself, our most respectful sympathy on the death of Her Royal Highnesr, Princess Christian, the news of which has been received with the deepest regret throughout the Dominion.” His Excellency received the following reply: "His Majesty the King commands me to convey an expression of his appreciation for the kind message of sympathy from the Government and people of New Zealand, and from Her Excellency and yourself.”
