An inscription in gold lettering appeared on the back of the case, consisting of the arms of the company and the wording—- “ Presented to the Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon on the occasion of her marriage to HJR.H. the Duke of York.” A deputation from the company presented the gift to H.R.H. the Duke of York and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon at Buckingham Palace on Friday, April 20, consisting of the Master, Sir Fredrick Hall, Bart., M.P., the Wardens, Aiderman Sir Louis Newton and Major Richard Riggs, and Mr Alfred Temple, F.S.A., Mr Edwin A. Fisher and Mr G. H. Wilward, Past Masters and Mr C. D. King Farlow, clerk of the company. LAMA’S DUMB MOTHER. A quaint story of Tibetan religious superstition is recalled by the death of the mother of the Tashi- Lama Gt' Shigatse, one of the principal cities of Tilw.t. The Tashi Lama is of equal rank with the better-known Lama Guru of Lhassa, but he rules over a smaller area, and has not nearly so much temporal power as the latter, although he is regarded as a holier person. The Tibetans believe that the successive Lamas are reincarnations of the same person. Accordingly the late Tashi Lama, who suffered much from the garrulity of his mother, declared that in his next incarnation he would be born the son of a dumb woman. When he died therefore search was made far and wide for a dumb woman who should be pregnant. Eventually one was found, and in due course became the mother of the present Tashi Lama.
