TIMBER COMMISSION

SITTING AT INVERCARGILL. The Timber Commission, consisting of Mr John Stranchan (chairman) and Messrs Gambull and Kemp, recently appointed to inquire into matters in connection with timber royalties, met in the Land Office yesterday to hear the evidence of representatives of local bodies. The objects of the Commission are to inquire and report upon the extent to which local authorities may have incurred or may incur loss of revenue from royalties consequent on the passing of the Forests Act, 1921-22, and upon the provision which should consequently be made from the revenues of the State Forest Service or otherwise, and generally to inquire into and report upon such other matters relating thereto. Evidence was given by the clerk of the County Council, Mr A. J. Service, and by Mr McPherson, local Conservator of Forests. Further evidence will be heard this morning.
