BELGIUM

CABINET RESIGNATIONS. DIFFICULTY OVER LANGUAGES. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) BRUSSELS, June 14. (Received June 15, 7.15 p.m.) The Senate by 143 to 4 rejected a Bill providing for instruction in Flemish at the Ghent University. Higher education throughout Belgium at the present time is only possible in the French language, but the war created a demand for a Flemish University. The problem of using Flemish in Ghent University divided Belgian politics keenly in 1922 when the Chamber voted against a compromise making the University half French and half Flemish, but favoured a gradual increase in the use of Flemish. The Senate’s decision led to the Cabinet’s resignation. GENERAL ELECTION POSSIBLE. BRUSSELS, June 14. (Received June 15, 7.15 p.m.) The King wil hold the usual consultations to-morrow. It is probable that M. Theunis will be asked to form a new Cabinet, but his task will be most difficult. It is thought a dissolution of Parliament and a general election will be necessary before the new Government can be constituted. CREATING AWKWARD POSITION. LONDON, June 15. The resignation of the Belgian Government may delay the inter-Allied negotiations.
