Y.M.C.A.

ADDRESS BY MR VARNEY. A special meeting of the local supporters of the Y.M.C.A. was held last night to meet the Dominion secretary, Mr A. Varney. Mr C. S. Longuet presided over a fair attendance and introduced the speaker. He referred to the fact that the local branch of the Y.M.C.A. had unfortunately oeen allowed to lapse through lack of interest and funds. He hoped that Mr Varney would be able to infuse confidence and enthusiasm into the meeting. Mr Varney assured the meeting that it was with the deepest regret that he had learnt of the lapse of the Invercargill branch and he left sure that every assistance would be forthcoming from the Dominion Executive both as regards finance and matters of organisation. He described in detail the work that was being carried on in other centres, and sketched the best form of organisation. There were many other district branches that had received serious set-backs as the results of the war but these had now completely re-organised ihemselves and were doing valuable work for their respective communities. The tune was now ripe for the movement to be started again in Southland and the speaker urged upon those present the necessity for getting matters under way immediately. The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to Mr Varney, which was carried with an enthusiasm that augured well for the future.
