SCHOOL COMMITTEES

CONSTITUTION OF ASSOCIATION AMENDED. The annual social and election of officers of the Southland School Committees’ Association, was held in the Floral Tea Rooms on Wednesday when there was a large attendance of members. Mr L. F. Webb, the retiring president, said that the real object was to amend the constitution cf the Association, which was now in rather a bad way owing to the lack of interest on the part of the country schools. The finances were also in a bad way, owing to the fact that the tewn school committees were not contributing to the funds of the main body. He thought that in the future some definite sum should be determined upon for the various committees to raise by subscription. In his opinion it would also l?e advisable to carry on without the assistance of the country school evommittees. He proposed that the new name for the Association be the Invercargill and Suburban School Committees’ Association. In any case it would be a pity to allow the Association to lapse altogether as it was capable of doing good work in the interests of education. Mr T. D. Lennie spoke in support of Mr Webb and said that he felt sure that a re-organised Association would be capable of doing much good. He hoped that in future every school committee in Invercargill would make i point of working ‘hrough the Association. It was decided to amend the Constitution as proposed, the .work of doing so to be left till the next general meeting to be held on July 18. The election ol officers resulted as follows:—President: Mr A. W. Jones; vicepresident, Mr E. Brown. An executive com mittee was elected comprising the chairman and one member from each of the school committees. The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to the retiring president, and to Mr A. Bain for his work on the Education Board on behalf of the Association.
