OTAUTAU NOTES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) On Sunday evening, a most impressive memorial service to the late Mr J. J. Wesney was conducted in the Methodist Church by the Rev. R. Richards. The preacher made reference to the great loss they had all suffered in the sudden demise of one who was intimately connected with the church and social life from early days. The pulpit was appropriately draped, suitable hymns being sung, and Miss D. Harrington played the Dead March in Saul, the congregation standing. A meeting was held in the school on Friday afternoon of those interested in the coming school’s “Paddy’s Market” and concert. Good success was reported by the various canvassers, and a fair amount of interest is being aroused. At a meeting of the Ladies’ Hockey Club, held in Mr Matheson’s rooms on Thursday night, there was a good attendance, when arrangements were made for the holding of a ball on July 18. Committees were set up to carry out the necessary details. The Invercargill Hibernian Band gave a very enjoyable performance in Otautau on Saturday night. Several concerted items were given by the band, a trombone trio was much appreciated, and Mr Wills gave a very pleasing cornet solo. Songs were also rendered by Mr Hall, and Mr A. R. Wills gave a recitation. A dance was held at the conclusion of the programme, to music supplied by Messrs Jellyman and Foster, extras being played by Mr G. Grieve. Mr Stanton acted as M.C. On the Recreation ground on Saturday a third-grade football match was played, Otautau v. Nightcaps. Some good play was witnessed, and the game resulted in a win for the home team by 16 points to 6. For Otautau, tries were scored by A. Harrington (2), M. Matheson and D. Ross, two of which were converted by the latter. For Nightcaps, Dixon kicked a penalty goal and Pope scored a try.
RIVERTON. (From Our Own Correspondent). The second meeting of the Riverton Vy orkers Education Association branch was held in the Town Hall on Wednesday evenCenturying, when Mr D. M. Rae, M.A., gave a very lengthy and interesting address on Russian Affairs during the 19th Century. There was a large attendance and Mr Rae was accorded hearty acclamation at the termination of his address. The next address will be delivered on Monday at 7.30 p.m. The subject will be “Bolshevism and Communism.” The Riverton senior Football team journeyed to Otautau on Wednesday and were defeated by the home team, after an interesting game, by 9 points to 5. The Park second grade golf team visited Riverton on Wednesday and, after a very enjoyable afternoon on the links, Riverton came out victorious by 9 games to 1. The following were the results:— Banks v. Padgett 5 and 4. Stevens v. Masters 2 up. Instone v. McDougall 2 down. Rouse v. Myers 3 and 2. Rae v. Vickery 5 and 4. Berndtson v. Garrett 5 and 4. McNeill v. Braak 1 up. Scobie v. Smith 7 and 6. Buddle v. Tapper 2 up. Birch v. McDonald 2 up.
