Mr C. J. Brodrick, left by the express yesterday morning for the North. Mr Adam Hamilton was elected a member of the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce at its meeting yesterday afternoon. A London cablegram announces the death of Kate Bishop, mother of Miss Marie Lohr, the actress. The members of the Timber Commission, Messrs Gambrill, Strauchan and Kemp, arrived in Invercargill last night and are staying at the Grand Hotel. Mr R. M. Strang was yesterday re-elected as representative of the Chamber of Commerce on the Executive Council of the Southland League. Mr Alexander Milne, late Chief Grader for the Dairy Divison of the Department of Agriculture, has joined the firm of Wilkins, Ltd., dairy specialists, Invercargill Mr E. Bowmar (chairman of the Southland County Council) and Mr B. Baas tian (County Engineer), will leave early next week for Christchurch, to attend a conference of South Island County Councils, in connection with the Main Highways Bill and heavy traffic. Mr A. E. Lawrence, of Oamaru, has been appointed editor of the Timaru Herald. Mr Lawrence was for some time, wires our Christchurch correspondent, editor of the West Coast Times, Hokitiks, *nd in 1914 became editor of the North Otago Times, Oamaru. He is now retiring from that position to go to the Timaru Herald. While in Oamaru Mr Lawrence had taken a keen and active interest in local affairs. A Dunedin message states that Alfred North, aged 64, prominently identified with local politics in South Otago, died suddenly yesterday afternoon. He represented the South Molyneux riding on the Clutha County Council for many years, and was chairman last year. He was also a member of the South Otago Hospital Board, and was its first chairman. He is survived by a widow and nine of a family, seven of whom are married.
