(Received June 13, 8.15 p.m.) The second qualifying round was played in rain and wind, at Troon, and produced many surprises. Eighty-eight players returned an aggregate of 159 and under, qualifying for the championship proper. Sarazen and Barnes had bad second rounds, giving them aggregates of 160, so they failed to qualify. Others who unexpectedly failed, were Vardon, Wethered, Massey, Boomer and Hoffner (American). Kirkwood with 152, qualified comfortably. The Americans, Diegel, Oigel and Hagen qualified. FOOTBALL. SUNDAY FOOTBALL. (Per United Press Association). WELLINGTON, June 13. The question of Sunday football, was re-opened at a meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union’s Executive to-night. A letter was received from the Buller Union asking whether it had power to make Sunday fixtures. The Buller Union contended that the matter, whether official fixtures were played on Sunday was a matter for purely local settlement. As the matter was questioned, it was referred to the Executive for a ruling. MOASCAR CUP. NEW RULES DECIDED ON WELLINGTON, June 13. New rules were to-night arranged for the Moascar Cup contests by the management committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union. It was proposed to have contests on the lines of the Heathcote Williams’ Shield, which is by challenge matches and are to be on the knockout principle. Schools can make their own arrangements as to grounds and travelling expenses and finance, the profits are to be remitted to the New Zealand Rugby Union and held in trust for the promotion of school football. No player over 20 prior to May 1, is allowed to represent a school in challenge match.

THE ALL BLACKS. INVITATION TO CANADA. WELLINGTON, June 13. An invitation was received by the New Zealand Rugby Executive that the All Black team should visit Alberta, Canada, when returning from the Enghsh tour. Consideration of the matter was held over. NEW ZEALAND RUGBY UNION. WELLINGTON, June 13. At the New Zealand Rugby Union meeting, the Minister of Public Works wrote, that the interview with the Prime Minister on the subject of the amount which Rugby unions, should pay in Amusement Tax, was being arranged. The East Coast Rugby Union protested against the proposal to amalgamate the East Coast and Poverty Bay unions, owing to transport difficulties. The New South Wales Rugby Association wrote, that an Imperial Conference on Rugby matters had been asked for by it to be held in England. Mr W. A. Guy (Taranaki) was appointed fifth North Island selector. BOWLING. NEW ZEALAND DEFEATS WAVERLEY. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright). (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) SYDNEY, June 13. New Zealand (162) defeated Waverley (156). SOCCER. NEW ZEALAND DEFEATED BY MAITLAND. SYDNEY, June 13. (Received June 14, 12.10 a.m.). Several thousand spectators witnessed the soccer match between New Zealand and South Maitland district, at Maitland. The local players did most of the attacking, but the visitors’ strong defence kept them out. Half-time scores were: Maitland 1, New Zealand nil. The second half was brighter and evenly contested. McGroary scored for Maitland and Brownlee for New Zealand, the final scores being Maitland 2, New Zealand 1.
