RETORT DISCOURTEOUS
ANGRY' WORDS IN COMMONS. LONDON, May 26. The “short and ugly word” was used in the House of Commons to-day, when Mr J. R. Remer, a Conservative member and a large employer, asked leave to introduce a Bill to free trade unionists from the obligation to subscribe to levies by their unions for the purpose of proi viding salaries for members of ParliaI ment. He referred to a case where out of a total subscription of £5OOO, £2OOO had been paid in respect of salary and election expenses for an M.P. The Labour Party challenged this statement, and Mr Remer, said that he referred to the Dockers’ Union. The secretary of the Dockers’ Union, Mr Sexton immediately denied the statement and called Mr Remer a “liar.” The Speaker intervened, and Mr Sexton withdrew the expression, but he retorted that the statement was a “deliberate untruth.” (Loud laughter). \ Mr Neil McLean (Labour), opposing the Bill, denied that any levy was imposed on any trade unionist to provide for a salary for an M.P. Permission to introduce the Bill was refused by 174 votes to 138. Labour members cheered the result.
