TOWN COUNCIL

LAST NIGHTS MEETING. iTie fortnightly meeting of j the Town Council was held last evening when there were present, the Mayor (Mr A. Bain), and Councillors W. H. Boyes, C. J. Brodrick, C. J. Broad, A. J. Geddes, H. J. Farrant, A. Glass, J. Miller, S. M. Macalister, R. P. Meek, E. Sheehan, L. Webb and H. Ritchie. LIBRARY COMMITTEE’S REPORT.

The report of the Library Committee was as fellows:—Having granted the St. Andrews’ Scottish Society permission to place a case of Scottish literature in the Reference Library. Recommend that tenders be ihvited for the supply and delivery of papers and periodicals as per specification, for a term of two years. Having authorised a requisition for library books to be ordered from London, estimated cost £I4G. Haring agreed to instal electric light in Scandrett and Sons office (four lights), on condition that an amount equal to 8 per cent cf the cost of installation, he added to the rent. With reference to the John Nocton Memorial Plaque, Medals and Scroll, that it be a recommendation to the Council, to provide a suitable case or cabinet. This Committee will undertake to find a place for it in the Library. That the Government to asked whether they would be prepared to sell the High School buildings and sections in Ccnon street, for the purpose of utilising the buildings as a Public Library. Having examined accounts amounting to £99 8/7 and passed same for payment. CORRESPONDENCE. The secretary of the Golf Club Ball Commttee wrote asking fcr the permission of the Council for the use of the Council Chamber on the night of the Club’s ball.— Councillor Farrant moved that the request be agreed to, but Councillor Miller protested, stating that there was a resolution passed previously that the Council Chamber shculd not be lent for any such purpose. The Mayor thereupon ruled in accordance with the Standing Orders of the Council, that as an objection had been raised the matter could not be further discussed. Several Councillors stated that the Chambers had been used on previous occasions without any objection having been raised, but the Mayor stated that it would require a notice of motion to rescind the motion, and, therefore, it was useless to consider the matter further. No action was therefore taken with regard to the request of the Committee. The Invercargill Chamber of Commerce wrote with regard to the proposed conference of local bodies on the subject of the railway express services, and asked the Council to appoint twe delegates to attend the Conference.—Councillors Broad and Miller were appointed to represent the Council. Messrs Herbert. Haynes and Co., asked permission to erect calico signs on their premises in Tay street. —Referred to Wcrks Committee. The Queen’s Park Golf Club, wrote protesting against the proposed increase in the rent of the club house without the matter first having been placed before the Club.— Referred to Reserves Committee with power to arrange a conference. Mr J. Crosby-Smith, on behalf cf the Museum Board, asked the Council to grant the usual annual subsidy towards the upkeep of the Museum. Referred to Finance Committee for a report. The Minister of Health wrote, stating that if the Counc'l desired to pursue the matter of a Municipal Milk Supply, he would suggest that it should consider dealing with the matter by a local Bill.— Received. Twenty-seven ratepayers residing in Yarrow street, forwarded a petition drawing attention to the necessity for widening that portion of Yarrow street lying between Lindisfarne and Ritchie street--Petition to lie on table.

CLOSURE OF BEAULY STREET. The following resolution was passed on the motion of Councillor Macalister, seconded by Councillor Ritchie:—“The Council having already resolved that Bcauly street south of Tweed street to the south side of Ab an street, and north cf Tweed street to the north side of Bute street, be closed by proclamation under Section 11 of “The Land Act, 1908,” now resolves that application accordingly to his Excellency the Governor-General be approved, and (hat the Council consents to Beauly street being closed as aforesaid, and the Council, by this resolution, determines that the closed street be vested in the Mayor, Councillors and Burgesses of the Borough of Invercargill, upon the same trusts as Blocks 80 and 81, that is as an endowment for the benefit of the New River Harbcur.”
