The Market of Southland. INVERCARGILL / I The Business Centre of the Province. SOUTHLAND is proud of its vigorous and thriving country towns and of the men whose devotion to the public interest is pushing them ahead, The future of Southland is wrapped up in their prosperity and expansion, and all Southlanders desire to see them grow in size and importance and will Combine when opportunity offers to assist them. There is no real rivalry between Invercargill and the country towns because their interests are identical. Whatever contributes to the progress of the country town contributes to the progress of Invercargill, because Invercargill is the trade depot and central market for the province as a whole. A glance at the map will show the position in which Invercargill stands in relation to the port of Bluff, the natural channel for the whole of Southland’s inward and outward trade. On the other hand Invercargill lies at the centre of the network of railways and roads that are the basis of the system of distribution for the province.
