PRINCESS MAUD ENGAGED NIECE OF KING GEORGE (By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright). (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, June 11. An official message from London states that Princess Maud is engaged to the Earl of Southesk’s eldest son, Lord Carnegie. (Received June 11, 9.30 p.m.) Princess Maud’s engagement is the result of her fondness fcr outdoor Highland sports. She frequently met Lord Carnegie when fishing. Princess Maud holds the record for killing the biggest salmon ever taken in the River Lee. Since Lord Carnegie returned from India, where he was Lord Chelmsfords’ aide-de-camp, he has seen much of the Princess. She was brought up in the utmost simplicity and was only allowed to share one maid with her sister until Princess Alexandra married Prince Arthur of Connaught. Princess Maud is an excellent linguist, speaking and writing French, German and Italian fluently. [Princess Maud was born in 1893, and is the second and youngest daughter of the Princess Royal, sister of King George.] COURT CIRCULAR ANNOUNCEMENT. BETROTHED COUPLE VISIT THEIR MAJESTIES. The King has commanded the Court to go into mourning for four weeks, but in consideration for the public at the height of the London season, has not cancelled the Ascot meeting. Arrangements have been made for the funeral service at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, on Friday. A memorial service will be held in Westminster Abbey at the same hour. Their Majesties have gone into deep mourning. They kept their engagements to visit the East End of London, yesterday, viewed Queen Mary’s Hospital, and drove through the crowded streets to the dockland settlement at Canningtown, which has 5000 members, men, women and children. They made a tour of the club rooms. The Prince of Wales in the meantime opened the public golf course at Richmond Park, which is intended to benefit the workers. A GAINSBOROUGH. LONDON, June 10. Gainsborough’s famous painting of his two daughters, recently auctioned for 2,000 guineas have been acquired for the National Gallery. BUILDING UP AGRICULTURE. LONDON, June 10. The Empire Producers’ organisation has issued a statement that the only way British agriculture can be strengthened is by freeing itself from foreign food trusts and combines. This is only achievable by a genuine all-Empire policy giving Britain first the full right of her own market and first opportunity after that to the overseas Empire. Die interests of British and overseas farmers are in common. Only by recognising this can the Home market be secured by British and overseas producers.
