AN APPRECIATION.
To the Editor. Sir, —As one of the audience who enjoyed the Orchestral Society’s performance on Thursday, June 7, for the special benefit of school children, allow me to express my admiration for the fine, public spirited action of Mr Ferguson and his players, who have come forward so generously to help along the cause of music in Invercargill. Let us hope that the real music given by the Orchestra will, in time, annihilate the wave of ragtime, jazz, etc., which has swept around us too long, with all its attendant cacophony. The Orchestra outdid even their first performance, playing with more vim and alertness. The annotated programme was delightfully put together, especially the remarks on the front page. I am not a teacher, nor connected with any school, but -might I suggest that these school concerts be held only for the upper standards. At Thursday’s performance, there were very young children, who would have been better deeping soundly in their beds, as they could not understand the music, and would talk, disturbing all in the vicinity who wished to listen. Let us hope that the older pupils will loyally aid this new and progressive movement by giving quiet attention throughout. In conclusion, let me say heartily, long live the Orchestral Society of Invercargill. I am, etc., PETER PAN. (
