TENNIS. DEFEAT OF MRS MALLORY. (By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, June 9. (Received June 10, 5.5 pjn.) Considerable surprise was occasioned by the victory of Mrs Clayton over Mrs Mallory at the North London championships, 6—3, 6—3. The winner played an inspired game, while Mrs Mallory could not get command of the ball., Her chances against Mme. Lenglen at Wimbledon now are considered small GOLF. ENGLISH CHAMPIONSHIPS. A NEW STYLE OF CLUBS. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright). (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, June 9. (Received June 9, 5.5 p.m.) Something approaching a golfing sensation has been caused over the nature of the clubs to be used by the American team at the championships opening on Monday. The Americans’ remarkable ability to put a “stop” on balls has been marvelled at. They have had large holes punched in the faces of their mashies and mashie niblicks, which have had jagged metal pushed out during the punching operations, the remains thus accounting for the “stop.” The question of the legality of these clubs has been raised and that an advantage is gained by the users is obvious. 1116 general opinion is that they contravene the regulations of the championship. The committee will consider the question before the matches begin. ATHLETICS. SCHOOLBOY’S FEAT. NEW YORK, June 10. (Received June 10, 11.30 p.m.) Francis Hussey, an eighteen-year-old schoolboy, equalled the world’s 100 yards record in 9 3-5 seconds.
