CHINA AND JAPAN

AN INCIDENT RECALLED. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright). (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) PEKIN, June 8. (Received June 10, 5.5 p.m.) The Government has sent a Note to Tokio demanding an apology, an indemnity and punishment of the Japanese commander whose marines shot down the Chinese supporters of the Japanese boycott last week. JAPANESE REPLY. TOKIO, June V. (Received June 10, 11.5 p.m.) Despite China’s protest, Japan has despatched four cruisers to reinforce the Japanese patrol on the Yangtze river and has announced its determination to defend the lives and property of her nationals in China. Japan will decline to enter into any negotiations with China over the boycott or the shooting incident until China settles the question of the boycott on Japanese goods. Japan insists that the marines acted purely on the defensive.
