N.Z. INDUSTRIES

POSSIBILITIES OF GREATER DEVELOPMENT. (Per United Press Association). DUNEDIN, June 8. Speaking to the Manufacturers’ Association, Mr Massey said he had repeatedly heard that the new tariff with Australia had enabled New Zealand manufacturers to compete successfully with Australian manufacturers on the Australian market, particularly in respect to agricultural machinery and implements. No better implements were made anywhere in the world. We, in New Zealand, had now come to the end of the war in which the Dominion had taken no unimportant part and were up against exactly the same thing that had given America trouble after the Civil War. They had plenty of raw material that was going to the other side of the world to be manufactured, and coming back in the form of manufactured goods. They also had thousands of young men, born, trained and educated in New Zealand who afterwards went to other parts of the world and they should be proud of the fact that they occupied good positions in other countries, but the country should be able to offer these young men positions in New Zealand equal to those they found elsewhere. He looked to manufacturers to help the legislature to improve matters in this respect.
