ABOUT PEOPLE

A London cable states that Earl Balfour is suffering from phlebitis—inflammation of a vein.

Mr W. J. Stead has been informed by the New Zealand Rugby Union that he has been appointed one of the selectors for the South Island team which will play North at Wellington on August 4. It was decided at yesterday’s meeting of the Invercargill Branch of the Farmers* Union to invite Mr Gorringe, of the Government Agricultural Department, to visit Southland in connection with the pig raising industry. A London cable states that the Duke and Duchess of York have taken up their permanent residence at White Lodge, Richmond. The Duchess is making satisfactory progress from whooping cough. A Sydney cable records the death of Mr William Arthur McArthur, formerly Junior Lord of the Treasury, a member of the firm of W. A. McArthur and a director of the McArthur Shipping Company. He recently arrived from England. Advice has been received that Mr Gayward, of Nelson, has been appointed to the position of Inspector of Scaffolding and Factories at Invercargill, in succession to Mr W. J. Chappell, who recently resigned from the Service.

Among the letters received by the Southland League expressing regret at Mr Winsloe’s resignation, is one from Mr R. Murrell, Manapouri. Mr Murrell states that the League, with Mr Winsloe as secretary, had done a great deal towards popularising the Lakes District as a tourist resort.

Mr Massey was tendered a public reception yesterday afternoon, in Dunedin, says a Press Association message, which was largely attended and considerable enthusiasm was displayed. The Mayoress handed to the Prime Minister a present for his wife, a gold wristlet watch, diamond studded, bearing the inscription “To Mrs W. F. Massey, from the citizens of Dunedin, as a token of their esteem and regard.”
