PLUNKET SOCIETY
REQUEST FOR' ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE. A deputation from the Royal Society for the Health of Women and Children waited on the Prime Minister yesterday morning with a request for the extension of the assistance granted by the Government to the society to the extent of £15,982 10/-, including nurses’ subsidies (says the Dunedin Star). The deputation was introduced by Mr T. K. Sidey, M.P. A statement made by Mr F. H. Carr showed the sum that was asked for to be made up as follows :—Karitane Hospital (Dunedin), £2,000; Karitane Hospital (Christchurch), £1,000: Karitane Hospital (Wanganui), £1,000; subsidy towards salary of director of Plunket nursing, £200; subsidy towards salary of secretary Central Council, £100; travelling allowance for director of Plunket nursing, £lB2 10/-; subsidies for nurses, £11,500; total, £15,982 10/-. Mr Massey, in reply, said it was true that we were over the slump, but on the one hand he had to keep taxation down and look after the country’s finances and on the other he was expected to find the money for every section of the people. He had received sufficient, applications during the few weeks of the financial year to absorb the whole year’s revenue. All he could do was to make the money go round. He was pledged to reduce taxation and he was going to do it. He would endeavour to induce his colleagues to increase the subsidy that was paid last year. (This was stated by Mrs Theomin to be about £11,000). They had better leave it at that.
