CATTLE DEALS
WINTER TRADE TO AUSTRALIA. NORTH ISLAND EXPERIMENT. (Special to the Times.) WELLINGTON, June 7. From the meagre first hand information, facts have been pieced together which discloses that big cattle deals are going on for the purpose of working up a winter trade to supply the Australian market. A ship of 8000 tons is being put into commission by the Union Company and will make two trips immediately. A Victorian cattlebuyer, Mr Keith McLean, of Gippsland, has been operating actively in various places in the Wellington province, and as far north as Taihape. It is learned that to date he has purchased about 1500 fat bullocks at prices that are regarded as very satisfactory to breeders. Special trains have been engaged to run from Longburn, Waverley and Hunterville, each conveying 250 bullocks, which will be loaded at Wellington on. June 18 and the morning of June 19 for Melbourne. Among the vendors are the following well known breeders: —Messrs T. A. Duncan (Hunterville), Muir (Taihape), W. Duncan (Taihape), F. Moore (Wanganui), H. Camerson (Turakina), H. Gillies (Palmerston North), C. Gorring (Palmerston North) and Brice (Hunterville). Both the Railway Department and the Union Steam Ship Company are doing everything possible to facilitate the transport and shipment and an endeavour is being made to work up a winter trade in fat bullocks for Australia, if the present trial shipments are satisfactory.
