(By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) SYDNEY, May 18. The North Coast steamer, Burringbar crashed into the vehicle ferry in Sydney harbour last night during the busy period. The ferry sank in a few minutes with the horses and vehicles. The latter included several motor cars. The passengers and crew were rescued just before the ferry plunged to the bottom. Five horses were drowned. SYDNEY, May 18. Residents of Mundooran, in the Mudgee district, are receiving threatening notes signed by Roy Governor. Police investigations so far have proved futile, the supposition being advanced that someone is using Governor’s name to cover up numerous petty robberies or that practical jokers are trying their hand. SYDNEY, May 18. Sir Joynton Smith has issued a writ for £25,000 against the Daily Mail, for alleged libel. SYDNEY, May 18. (Received May 18, 7.40 p.m.) Great crowds witnessed the annual University commemoration procession. Despite their expurgated song-book, the students succeeded in making the proceedings very lively. The usual skits on public events, accentuated the drift noticeable in recent years, to broader and coarser fun, compared with the finer sparkling humour of oldertime comments. Sparkle was completely lacking to-day. ADELAIDE, May 18. The general conference of the Methodist Church of Australia has opened. The Rev. E. H. Sugden was elected president.
